Spain opens first eco-friendly hostel

If you happen to be backpacking across Europe this summer, check out Barcelona Urbany. According to Treehugger, it plans to open its doors in June, and will feature a whole host of características verdes, including a rainwater harvesting system, energy efficient lamps, and a plan to reuse at least 50% of the building’s water.
St. Petersburg’s sustainable space needle

A controversial skyscraper planned for St. Petersburg will be among the most sustainable in the world — if it ever gets built. Apparently, citizen’s of the historic Russian city are a little hesitant to give up their familiar skyline to what will be the tallest building in Europe. The UK-based architectural firm, RJMJ, designed the twisting needle to be a monument to energy conservation and green building. Ironically, it will house Russia’s largest oil company Gazprom.
