Putin warns West his successor to be just as tough
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday warned the West against expecting an easier ride under his successor Dmitry Medvedev.
“Dmitry Medvedev will be free to demonstrate his liberal views,” Putin said after talks at his Novo Ogaryevo residence outside Moscow with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
“But he is no less a Russian nationalist, in the good sense of the word, than I am, and I do not think that with him the partnership will be more simple.”
Putin was speaking at a press conference just before Merkel went to a separate meeting with Medvedev, the first between a Western leader and the new president-elect since his controversial election March 2. Merkel did not respond until seeing Medvedev.
“President Putin just told me that it won’t be easier with you than with him,” she said in televised comments. “But I restrained myself and didn’t say that I hope that at least relations won’t be more complicated.”
Medvedev answered with a chuckle that he expected to continue “the frankness and friendship… of your relations with President Putin”.
Putin also lashed out at the Western military alliance NATO, accusing it of trying to become a “substitute for the United Nations.”
On another sensitive question-the imprisonment of businessman and Kremlin opponent Mikhail Khodorkovsky-Putin would not comment on the likelihood of a pardon.
“Questions of pardoning are in the hands of the head of state,” he said. Merkel came to Russia to take the political temperature ahead of Putin handing over to Medvedev, who has crafted a more liberal image than his ex-KGB mentor.
But Putin says he will become prime minister after he steps down in May, leading analysts to predict that real power may lie with the outgoing president, not his inexperienced replacement.
The German leader said there was no alternative to cooperation between Moscow and EU countries, which have frequently clashed with Putin over democracy in Russia and security concerns.
During their brief talks, Merkel and Putin discussed Kosovo, Russian energy exports to Europe and other major international issues that Merkel said showed the need for cooperation.
Dude, Sweet Airstream

The Airstream trailer is a cultural icon, its look little changed in decades. Now, two Nissan designers, both big Airstream fans, have created the BaseCamp, a trailer that takes the Airstream look into the twenty-first century.
Whither Democracy in America?
![]() |
In 1871, Walt Whitman, the great poet of America, wrote, “We have frequently printed the word democracy, yet I cannot too often repeat that it is a word the real gist of which still sleeps, quite unawakened, notwithstanding the resonance and the many angry tempest out of which its syllables have come, from pen to tongue. It is a great word, whose history, I suppose, remain unwritten, because that history has yet to be enacted.” (Democracy Vistas)
Bankrupt Your Startup the Easy Way
AUSTIN, Texas — A tongue-in-cheek panel at South by Southwest Interactive promised to teach attendees how to turn their startup dollars into bankruptcy notes in just 15 easy steps.
Startuppers Joshua Strebel, Sean Tierney and Andrew Hyde took over room 19 in the fourth floor of the Austin Convention Center and told tales of their past business failures and their plans for upcoming ones. “We’re teaching Fail, and not just fail — we’re talking weapons-grade Fail,” promised Hyde.
Austin’s Brisk, but About to Heat Up
And that would be a bad thing, if you bought into the “ spring break for the internet” hype and, for instance, loaded up your suitcase with shorts and sunscreen rather than a winter coat. Because it’s cold here.

New York Times has a good article on this. What amazed me was his love for academia and teaching as opposed to the more common opposite route. Sergey and Larry of Google are notable examples.

Saturn Moon Rhea May Have Rings
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — New observations by a spacecraft suggest Saturn’s second-largest moon may be surrounded by rings. If confirmed, it would the first time a ring system has been found around a moon. The international Cassini spacecraft detected what appeared to be a large debris disk around the 950-mile-wide moon Rhea during a flyby in 2005. Scientists proposed that the halo likely contained particles ranging from the size of grains to boulders.

Phenom 9900-powered case mod could lift off at any moment

You know that potent 2.6GHz Phenom 9900 CPU that quite a few folks are waiting for? Apparently, exactly one of said chips has escaped the labs (with AMD’s blessing, of course) and made its way into the sponsored (and recently completed) Project: Phenom gaming rig. Of course, the design here is way, way over the top, and while folks allergic to chrome and not so fond of blatant overkill may be scrunching their noses up right about now, there’s no denying that it’s packin’ a nice set of internals. Hit up the read link for a gazillion and one images along with a number of construction videos — just slip on your shades beforehand, cool?

Warren Buffett Biography
Warren Edward Buffett was born on August 30, 1930 to his father Howard, a stockbroker-turned-Congressman. The only boy, he was the second of three children, and displayed an amazing aptitude for both money and business at a very early age. Acquaintances recount his uncanny ability to calculate columns of numbers off the top of his head - a feat Warren still amazes business colleagues with today. At only six years old, Buffett purchased 6-packs of Coca Cola from his grandfather’s grocery store for twenty five cents and resold each of the bottles for a nickel, pocketing a five cent profit. While other children his age were playing hopscotch and jacks, Warren was making money. Five years later, Buffett took his step into the world of high finance. At eleven years old, he purchased three shares of Cities Service Preferred at $38 per share for both himself and his older sister, Doris. Shortly after buying the stock, it fell to just over $27 per share. A frightened but resilient Warren held his shares until they rebounded to $40. He promptly sold them - a mistake he would soon come to regret. Cities Service shot up to $200. The experience taught him one of the basic lessons of investing: patience is a virtue.

Iran dismisses ‘worthless’ UN resolution
Iran on Tuesday dismissed the latest UN Security Council sanctions over its nuclear programme as “worthless”, vowing to press on with the contested drive which the West fears could be used to make weapons.
The Security Council on Monday imposed its third set of sanctions against Iran in the space of 15 months to punish Tehran’s repeated refusal to suspend the process of uranium enrichment.
The resolution “is worthless and unacceptable and it is condemned”, foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said in a statement quoted by Iranian news agencies.
“The continuation of this trend (of issuing resolutions) will have no effect on the Iranian people and the government’s determination in seeking its legitimate and lawful right for peaceful nuclear activities,” he added. Iran had been hoping its ongoing cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog to answer questions about past areas of ambiguity in its atomic programme would mean the nuclear case would be taken away from the Security Council.
Officials have also repeatedly hailed the UN watchdog’s latest report as a success for Tehran that “closed” its nuclear case, even though the body was unable to confirm the atomic drive was peaceful.
“The issuing of this biased and anti-Iranian resolution is another blow to the reputation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and has increased the invalidity of the UN Security Council,” Hosseini added.
Fourteen of the council’s 15 members voted in favour of Resolution 1803 put forward by Britain and France, who delayed the vote in a bid to win unanimity to send a strong signal to Tehran.
The resolution gives Iran three months to comply with UN and IAEA demands to suspend uranium enrichment, a process that can be used to make both nuclear fuel and atomic weapons.
Iran insists its nuclear programme is solely aimed at generating energy and it has every right to the nuclear fuel cycle, including uranium enrichment.
“The resolution is a serious political signal for Tehran on the need to cooperate with the UN Security Council” the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.
Indonesia abstained, but Libya, South Africa and Vietnam, which joined Indonesia in expressing reservations about the need for fresh sanctions, finally voted in favour
