Have you ever stumbled across the live streaming for certain reality shows during a random bit of channel hopping? If so, there’s every chance you were dismayed by the utter tedium of the vacuous conversation taking place between the fame-craving dullards on display. However, compared to the dire nature of My Blueberry Nights, it will seem profound in hindsight.

THE GOLDEN COMPASS
A fantastic bestiary inhabits “The Golden Compass,” prowling and flapping and slithering and fluttering. The animals, most of which are called daemons and are manifestations of the human soul, hover at the side of their people and near the story’s edge, where their coos and barks mix with the ambient clatter and clang. Every so often, an animal leaps forward, its fur raised in alarm, its feathers fanned in flight. And because these are no ordinary animals, they also offer words of comfort, advice, warning. In this otherworldly realm, humans have no dominion over these creatures, yet they are not merely equals, either. They are one.
RAMBO 4

Sylvester Stallone’s “Rambo” sequel opens today. Stallone wrote, directed and starred in the film, which features 11 producers. In the film, John Rambo (now living in Thailand, catching snakes) assembles a group of mercenaries and leads them on a river to a Burmese village and rescue of a group of Christian missionaries. Reviewers are wary, reviews are mixed, and nobody avoided comment on the bizarre nature of Stallone’s physical aging. Huffington Post

Rambo IV

Sylvester Stallone’s latest attempt at career resuscitation comes to us in the form of “Rambo,” the fourth installment of the action series. The last time we saw John Rambo, he was busy helping the Taliban overthrow the Soviets. That sure worked out great. This time, Stallone takes us to the less incendiary geopolitical hotspot of Burma, where the ruling military junta has been waging a brutal 60 year civil conflict against the Karen ethnic group.

Cake are a US indie band whose style has varied over the years since 1994’s Motorcade of Generosity.
The ‘red thread’ has been their invention and intelligence - they’re closer, intellectually, to They Might Be Giants or Talking Heads - as well as a comfort with styles such as country, jazz and rap. The spare lead guitar is a feature that draws in the listener to an entrancing mix.
SCREENING: ONE MISSED CALL

There’s a new horror flick coming, but it’s not just a brand new American horror flick. It’s a REMAKE of a JAPANESE ONE! This could be the beginning of a really cool trend. Edward Burns [who is one of those guys who is too good to have A Sound of Thunder slithering underneath his bed] and Shannyn Sossamon [who is as sexy in real life as she is onscreen] star in One Missed Call, a flashy slice of scares about folks who start getting voice mails from their future selves providing information about impeding murders.
